Dear Local 282 Members:

Beginning Thursday, September 6th and continuing until the end of September, Dan Wiley our insurance agent through The New York State Professional Firefighters Association Inc., will begin our open enrollment for the enhanced life insurance benefit for all active members. These benefits are made available to the membership on a voluntary basis. Dan will be visiting every firehouse on all four shifts to give a brief presentation and he will leave brochures and rate charts (see attached visit schedule).

The first life insurance plan offered is a group term plan that the large majority of our membership currently has through the NYSPFFA, and will be available to all members and their families regardless of past or present medical conditions. In the past, the maximum amount of coverage through Prudential for the union member was capped at $150,000; however, the new amounts will allow anyone currently with the plan to increase to $250,000 without any medical questions/physicals and will also offer the $250,000 to all new members to the plan without medical underwriting.

The second life insurance plan offered is a new permanent life insurance plan made available to the NYSPFFA through ING. It offers permanent individual policies to members, their spouses and children - all regardless of medical conditions. This plan will lock in the rates for the life of the policy and will build cash value that will help eliminate the premiums in the future.  The plan will offer the first $100,000 of coverage on the member as long as they are actively at work, have not been hospitalized in the last ninety days, and have not missed more than five consecutive days of work due to illness or injury. It will also offer a guarantee for the spouse for whatever $5 per week will purchase, as well as a $25,000 policy on each dependant child. This is an ideal policy to maximize your pension, take the zero option through the state pension plan, and cover the spouse’s income using some personal term insurance along with some permanent life insurance through ING.

Additionally, Dan Wiley will be discussing the new enhanced AFLAC Cancer Plan.  We would encourage all members, even those with the current plan, to take a look at this protection as it has been completely enhanced and is a much better plan than the current one in force. Those members in the current plan will be able to keep what they have at the same rates or convert it to the new better plan.

When Dan visits your firehouse, please take the time to listen carefully so you can make an educated decision for the protection of your families.
